I'm from India, where the beauty ideal is EXTREMELY narrow. Every actress in india has the same waist length hair and high pitched voice, which makes them clone-like. After coming to USA, I felt encouraged to cut my hair in a bob and became less self-conscious about my deep voice. It feels light on my head and it makes me feel ultra-sexy. When I go back to visit my relatives in India, they usually try to convince me that i should grow my hair out (you'll have better luck finding a husband they say). Well, screw it, Im having fun.

I'm so very glad you're enjoying your Bob! Being a guy, and having had my own Bob for about 4 years, I know well the pressure of having people trying to get you to change your look. If you enjoy how it looks and how it feels, I say your friends and family should be supporting you completely. But then people often don't behave logically. Sometimes you just have to take the heat in order to be yourself. Being yourself is very important.

And as for finding a husband, would you really want a husband who married you because your appearance fits the cookie-cutter norm rather than because of who you really are as a person? Being yourself and finding a spouse who likes who you are as a person is better than finding a spouse who likes you for how willing you are to obey a hairstyle tradition that doesn't fit you.

A husband who marries you for your hair, clothing, or even your size or weight, isn't really marrying you; They're marrying your image. As much as I worship the Bob Haircut, I don't think any hairstyle or any outward appearance should be the deciding factor when choosing a friend or spouse.

Personally, I think Indian women are among the most beautiful women in the world. I have seen the occasional Indian woman with a Bob and to me it only makes them even more beautiful.

Hello Surya,

It's nice to see that you are going against
the grain of Indian society and choosing
what hair style you wish to have.

Do you have very straight hair?
Many indian ladies tend to have very straight
hair which is fabulous for bob hairstyles!

My hair is slighlty wavy - has a kink in it
but with the help of hair straighteners and good
blow drying my hair is very straight!

I actually have thick curly hair, typical for southern Indians. Compared to the hours it takes to dry and style when its long, keeping it short and straightening it is much simpler.

Apologies Sureya - that's perhaps me using a
stereotypical view of Indian hair.
Anyway, I had my already short bob into
a slighter shorter bob on Friday - just to
clean up the invert up at the back.

I bet it feels great holding less weight on your head. (It definitely great for me.) Bobs are sexy, they feel light, and they are more manageable. What more could I want in a haircut.

Well said.

Besides I have a boyfriend who thinks bobs are the sexiest. There goes my relatives' theories.
